Closing the organic waste loop in ecologically sensitive areas

South Africa’s safari and ecotourism sector contributes billions of rands to the national economy and funds critical conservation initiatives across the country. Yet one of the most overlooked threats to these landscapes does not arrive from outside the reserve fence; it originates in the back-of-house operations of the lodges and resorts that sit within them. Organic waste, when poorly managed, can undermine the very ecosystems that ecotourism depends on.

“The wildlife reserve environment demands a different standard of waste management,” says Brian Küsel, Director of BiobiN South Africa. “When organic waste is exposed in a game reserve, it doesn’t stay in one place. It attracts animals, alters their behaviour, and introduces disease pathways that can spread across entire ecosystems.”

Remote operations, greater responsibility

Many bush resorts and safari lodges operate far from the infrastructure that urban facilities take for granted. Waste collection services are less frequent, and the window between collection cycles is longer. This places greater responsibility on these facilities to manage organic waste on-site in a way that contains both the material and the associated odours, preventing interaction with wildlife.

Enclosed in-vessel composting systems, such as BiobiN, are particularly well-suited to this environment. The system processes organic waste within a sealed, aerated vessel, eliminating odour and preventing access by scavenging animals. The result is a self-contained waste management solution that operates independently of external logistics.

Feeding patterns and ecosystem disruption

Exposed organic waste is a documented disruptor to the natural feeding behaviour of wildlife. Species such as vervet monkeys and baboons are commonly attracted to food waste at lodge facilities. Once animals associate human settlements with a reliable food source, their natural foraging patterns are altered. Aggression within troops and towards humans tends to increase, and the animals continue to return. For endangered or sensitive species, the downstream effects of altered feeding behaviour can be far-reaching.

Biosecurity and disease control

The presence of exposed organic waste creates conditions that facilitate the transmission of disease between animal populations and potentially to humans. Decomposing food waste can harbour bacteria, including Salmonella and Escherichia coli. When wildlife scavenges on unmanaged waste, these organisms can enter animal populations that would not otherwise be exposed. This concern has become more urgent in the context of recent Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks across southern Africa, where the movement of contaminated biological material across ecological boundaries has been identified as a key transmission pathway.

In-vessel composting addresses this risk through biological process as well as containment. As microorganisms break down organic material inside a BiobiN unit, internal temperatures typically rise to between 55°C and 70°C. Sustained heat at these levels reduces the viability of many common disease-causing organisms in organic waste streams, stabilising the material before it leaves the system.

Meeting sustainability standards in ecotourism

Lodges seeking recognition under frameworks such as the Global Ecosphere Retreats (GER) Standard, one of the most rigorous sustainability certifications in nature-based tourism, which requires compliance across Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce, are expected to demonstrate active, positive environmental impact rather than simply mitigating harm. On-site waste management systems that divert organic material from landfill, reduce transport emissions and produce compost for landscape restoration align directly with these expectations.

“Ecotourism has a responsibility to the landscape it operates within,” adds Küsel. “Adopting enclosed waste management is one of the most direct ways a reserve or lodge can demonstrate that commitment.”
