Organic waste management industry trends to look out for in 2023

Last year the organic waste management sector saw a significant amount of development in alternative waste treatment (AWT) methods and technology that was responsible for diverting more of this waste stream from landfill. This created a more secondary resource supply and a stronger secondary resource economy. We saw this with the compost and biogas markets. In 2023 we will see a continuation of the growth of the secondary resource market for organic waste.

A year in review: What happened in organic waste management this year

Every year there seems to be more emphasis placed on addressing waste as a resource and creating a circular economy with different waste streams. With food and organic waste, it was no different. More attention on a national, regional and local level was given to different alternative waste treatment (AWT) technologies and processes that divert organic waste and process it into a resource. These were the milestones that we, as an industry, saw in 2022:

#Netflix feature review: Down to Earth – Episode 2 (Regenerative agriculture)

Zac is back, road-tripping across Australia to explore the country’s landscape, wildlife, and sustainable sectors. BiobiN was originally founded in Australia in response to the growing need to recycle the large amounts of organic and wet materials being sent to landfill. Drafting an integrated waste management strategy for a retail business – a checklist

Environmental management has become a crucial part of operating a business, and an integral component under this umbrella is waste management. No longer can a business discard all their waste into a ‘general waste’ bin, you need to have a plan for all waste streams, from solid waste recyclables to food and organic waste. Waste management for every business will look different, there is no one size fits all waste management strategy.

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

Approximately 14% of the world’s agricultural produce grown is lost after harvest, and a further 17% is
lost within the retail sector before it reaches the consumer. An estimated 3.1 billion people worldwide
do not have access to a healthy diet, and about 828 million people go hungry. This food loss and
waste account for up to 10% of the total global GHGs that contribute to climate change and global
warming.

World Environmental Health Day: Prioritising Environmental Health for Human Health

When our relationship with nature is exploitative and destructive, the environment tends to strike
back, whether it be in the form of a pandemic or a subtle encroaching natural disaster like drought
and food shortages. We don’t need detailed scientific research to tell us that the health of the
environment directly impacts human health.

Composting as a solution for all commercial organic waste streams

With organic waste regulations tightening, businesses have to look for alternative treatment options for their organic waste. Landfill costs are increasing, and municipal authorities are clamping down on businesses producing large volumes of organic waste and sending it to landfill.

BiobiN South Africa discusses why on-site composting units are a very feasible alternative waste treatment solution that can process large volumes of any type of organic waste.

Urban greening, a key component to sustainable development

What does a sustainable future look like? A net-zero carbon footprint, clean air and water, sustainable food sources, and no waste. Restoring an important natural resource with our food and organic waste

Resource scarcity and shortages are not a new theme for us here in South Africa. While water and energy shortages have rocked our normality and forced us to adjust to challenging circumstances, there is one resource shortage that is less talked about but needs to be bought to the absolutely fore in the public’s attention.
